Breanna's funeral has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 14, 2012,
the earliest workable date the military cemetery could provide.
The funeral will begin at noon at Acheson and Graham Mortuary, 7944
Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, California 92504, (951) 688-1221.
At approximately 1:30, the escorted processional will depart the mortuary
for the drive of approximately 30 to 45 minutes to Riverside National
Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, California 92518, (951)
653-8417. After a brief period in a staging area, we will proceed to
a committal station for Breanna's honor service beginning at 2:30. Breanna
will be buried with full Military Honors. We will depart that station
by 3:00. Due to cemetery protocol, there will be no graveside service.
We know that driving to Riverside on a weekday may be inconvenient,
but Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood is closed to new burials
because it is full and Riverside National Cemetery is the closest military
cemetery to our home and is open only Monday through Friday. There are
no weekend burials.
After the burial, Jilliene and Evan Schenkel ( Breanna's parents), Marc
Marrero ( Breanna's brother), Emily Schenkel (Breanna's sister), Breanna's
daughter Alexis (if not too tired), Breanna's relatives and friends
and many of Breanna's Army buddies will gather at the Schenkel home
in Tarzana, California. Directions to their home will be available at
the funeral. Please do not call their home. All calls will go to the
answering machine.
Evan, Jilliene, Marc and Emily are Jewish, but in keeping with Breannas
wishes, her funeral service will be Christian. At our home following
the funeral and the next two nights, we will, in accordance with Jewish
tradition, sit Shiva. This means that for those who choose to participate,
we will conduct a brief Jewish service in one part of our home, officiated
by Rabbi Heather Miller. Those who do not choose to participate in that
brief service will have other areas in which to mingle while that service
is conducted, so everyone is welcome in our home. Jews and non-Jews
alike are welcome to join us in prayer in honor of Breannas memory.
Shiva services will be as follows:
Tuesday, Februrary 14, 2012, at 8:00 p.m.;
Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.; and
Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.
It is not our intention to offend or inconvenience anyone by scheduling
Breannas funeral for Valentine's Day. Nor was it our intention
to have the funeral on the same date that Dios Marrero, Marcs
father, died in 2009. We also know that this date is the date that Adir
Vered, Emilys close friend from high school, was buried in 2010.
We were unable to schedule Breannas funeral for dates earlier
than February 14 for a number of reasons, including the fact that many
of Breanna's Army buddies want to attend, we very much want them to
attend, and Breanna's 40th Military Police Company, which deployed to
Iraq, has a mandatory training on dates that include February 9 and
10.
Many of you have expressed a desire to send flowers or food.
If you would like to send flowers, please contact Beverly Hasson-Ing
at Mr. Bs Flowers. She is coordinating all flowers for the funeral
and for our home. Beverly may be contacted at Mr. B's Flowers, 7217
Corbin Avenue, Winnetka, California 91306, (818) 993-1234, beverly@mrbsflowers.com.
The cemetery will permit only five floral arrangements. Any additional
flowers delivered to the mortuary or to the cemetery will be discarded
by staff. Unfortunately, the mortuary and the cemetery are unable to
donate any additional flowers to a charitable organization. Therefore,
Beverly will send five arrangements to the mortuary, which will transport
them to the cemetery. All other flowers purchased from Beverly by anyone
will be sent to our home.
We would like not to have different types of food at our home over
the period of February 14-16. Therefore, if you would like to send food,
please contact Brent's Deli at 19565 Parthenia Street, Northridge, California
91324, (818) 886-5679. Brent's will be providing all the food for our
home for February 14, 15 and 16. If you place an order, state that it
is for the Schenkel home for the period of February 14-16.
We thank all of you for your support. We also thank the soldiers Breanna
served with in Iraq for their guidance as we planned Breanna's Military
Funeral. We have read every single e-mail and card we have received
and have listened to every message left for us.
We know you want to continue to help us in any way you can, but until
the funeral, we would greatly appreciate it if you would not call us.
We promise that if we need anything, we will let someone know.
Some of you have asked where you might donate in memory of Breanna.
At a later date, we will provide such information.
Evan, Jilliene, Marc, Emily and Alexis thank you for keeping us in your
prayers.
Very truly yours,
EVAN B. SCHENKEL
